Can Low Blood Sugar Cause Nausea?
Medically reviewed by Faith Coleman, University of New Mexico School of Medicine on August 21st, 2026.
Yes, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may cause nausea along with other uncomfortable symptoms. When blood glucose drops below 70 mg/dL, your body begins a hormonal stress response that affects the digestive system, leading to hunger and mild shakiness. Below 60 mg/dL nausea and stomach discomfort occur. Other symptoms typically accompany the nausea, including sweating and, shakiness. In more extreme cases confusion, and rapid heartbeat may occur. The nausea usually resolves within 15-20 minutes after consuming fast-acting carbohydrates like glucose tablets, fruit juice, or candy. If you experience frequent episodes of low blood sugar with nausea, consult your healthcare provider to identify underlying causes and develop an appropriate management plan.
