What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?

Medicare drug plans can't cover drugs used only for weight loss. The GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary Medicare program that runs from July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027. It's open to you if you have Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage. If you qualify, three GLP-1 medicines for weight loss cost $50 a month.

The $50 doesn't count toward the Part D out-of-pocket cap ($2,400 in 2027), and what happens after 2027 hasn't been decided. Our guide to the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge explains it in full.

  • $50 a month for Wegovy, Foundayo or Zepbound KwikPen
  • Runs through December 31, 2027
  • Needs a prescription and prior authorization

Do You Qualify for the GLP-1 Bridge?

Medicare sets the rules. You must be 18 or older and have Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage.

The medicine must be prescribed for weight loss, alongside diet and activity changes. Your BMI when you started a GLP-1 must be 35 or higher, or lower with certain health conditions.

People with type 2 diabetes, moderate to severe sleep apnea or noncirrhotic MASH (fatty liver disease) can't use the Bridge. Their Part D plan may cover a GLP-1 for that condition instead.

A licensed doctor reviews your weight history and health conditions by video and can talk through whether you may qualify. If the medicine is right for you, your doctor can prescribe it and send the prescription to your pharmacy. The pharmacy and Medicare handle the approval.

Frequently asked questions

Not through your regular drug coverage: by law, Medicare drug plans can't cover drugs used only for weight loss. Through the GLP-1 Bridge, people who qualify pay $50 a month for Wegovy, Foundayo or Zepbound KwikPen through December 31, 2027.

Adults with Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage, prescribed a GLP-1 for weight loss. Your BMI when you started treatment must be 35 or higher. It can be 30 or higher with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled high blood pressure or chronic kidney disease (stage 3a or higher). Or it can be 27 or higher with prediabetes, a past heart attack or stroke, or peripheral artery disease with symptoms.

Yes, if your plan includes drug coverage. A licensed doctor on Doctronic can go over the criteria with you by video.

You can't use the Bridge, but your Part D plan may cover a GLP-1 such as Ozempic or Mounjaro for diabetes. Your plan's drug list shows which ones and what you pay.

A licensed doctor can prescribe a GLP-1 if it's appropriate and send the prescription to your pharmacy. From there, the pharmacy asks Medicare to approve it.

Medicare hasn't decided. The Bridge runs through December 31, 2027, and Medicare.gov will post what comes next.
