Key takeaways

  • A Special Enrollment Period lets you change Medicare Advantage or drug coverage outside the usual enrollment dates.

  • A plan leaving Medicare or your area is one of the life events that gives you one.

  • The Special Enrollment Period's dates depend on how the plan ends, and your plan's notice says which apply.

  • If you don't join a new plan, Medicare enrolls you in Original Medicare, with no drug coverage.

  • Ask for renewals (new prescriptions for medicines you already take) before your current plan ends, so a new plan doesn't mean a gap in care.

What is a Special Enrollment Period?

A Special Enrollment Period is a chance to change your Medicare Advantage or Medicare drug coverage when certain events happen in your life. It works outside the usual windows, such as open enrollment from October 15 to December 7.

Each Special Enrollment Period has its own start and end dates.

What happens when your plan leaves your area?

You get a Special Enrollment Period to choose new coverage. You can join another Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare drug plan, or go to Original Medicare.

Medicare.gov lists different dates depending on how the plan ends. The notice your plan sends should tell you which applies. Confirm it on Medicare.gov.

If you don't choose a new plan, you'll have Original Medicare without Part D drug coverage. Our guide to what to do if your Medicare Advantage plan is leaving covers the notices and your choices. It also explains your right to buy a Medigap policy (supplemental insurance for Original Medicare).

What other events give you a Special Enrollment Period?

Medicare.gov lists many life events, with the rules for each. These are some of the most common:

  • You move: to a new address outside your plan's area, or back to the U.S.

  • You lose other coverage: such as job-based coverage, which gives you 2 full months after the month it ends.

  • You lose Medicaid: you have 3 full months to change plans.

  • You have Medicaid or Extra Help: you can change your coverage once a calendar month.

  • A 5-star plan is available: you can switch to it once between December 8 and November 30.

How do you keep your prescriptions and doctor visits going?

List every drug you take with its dose, plus your doctors and your pharmacy. Then check each one against the new plan before you choose:

  • Drugs: is each one on the plan's 2027 drug list (formulary), and at what tier?

  • Approvals: does a drug need prior authorization, the plan's approval before it pays?

  • Doctors: are your doctors and hospitals in the plan's network?

  • Pharmacy: does the plan prefer a different pharmacy?

Plan your renewals early. If a prescription will run out near the switch, ask for a renewal before your current plan ends.

If your new plan doesn't cover a drug you take, you may get a one-time, 30-day transition fill. That gives you time to ask your doctor about a covered option or ask the plan for an exception. Our guide to Medicare Part D explains drug lists and tiers.

See a doctor online today

A licensed doctor can review your medications by video, renew prescriptions when appropriate and send them to your pharmacy.

  • $39 video visit

Can telehealth fill the gap while you change plans?

Yes, for many visits. Medicare's expanded telehealth rules, including video visits from home, run through December 31, 2027. Medicare Advantage plans may add more. Check the new plan's Evidence of Coverage, the document that lists what it covers and what you pay.

If a prescription runs out the week your plan changes, you shouldn't have to wait weeks for a new doctor's appointment. On Doctronic, a licensed doctor can see you by video for a renewal or a new health question. A video visit is $39. Doctronic accepts Medicare. Where can you check your dates and get help?

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. You can also join a separate Part D plan for drugs in the same Special Enrollment Period.

Usually on the first of the month after you make the change, but check the start date with your new plan or on Medicare.gov. A choice made in open enrollment, by December 7, 2026, starts January 1, 2027.

If your plan has ended, you'll have Original Medicare without drug coverage. You can usually join a plan in the next open enrollment, October 15 to December 7, and a Part D late enrollment penalty may apply. Check your options on Medicare.gov or with your SHIP.

No. A Special Enrollment Period covers Medicare Advantage and drug plans. Medigap has its own guaranteed issue right, which applies only if you go to Original Medicare.

Not automatically. Each plan has its own drug list, so a drug covered now may not be on the new plan's list.

The Bottom Line

If your plan is leaving your area, find your Special Enrollment Period dates on your notice. Then check your drugs, doctors and pharmacy against any new plan before you choose.
