When Should You Take Simvastatin?
Medically reviewed by Lauren Okafor | MD, The Frank H Netter MD School of Medicine, Loyola University Medical Center on August 22nd, 2026.
Simvastatin should be taken once daily in the evening, typically between 6 PM and bedtime. The liver produces most cholesterol during nighttime hours, making evening dosing optimal for cholesterol synthesis inhibition. Most patients take simvastatin with or without food, as absorption remains consistent. The typical starting dose ranges from 10-20 mg daily, with maximum doses reaching 80 mg for high-risk patients. Take simvastatin at the same time each evening to maintain consistent blood levels. Avoid grapefruit juice, which can increase drug concentrations by up to 15 times and raise the risk of muscle-related side effects.
