What is the Best Time to Take Levothyroxine for Maximum Absorption?
Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.
Take levothyroxine consistently on an empty stomach, usually 30–60 minutes before breakfast. Taking it at bedtime, at least several hours after the last meal, may also work well. Food can reduce or make absorption less consistent. Taking it at the same time daily maintains consistent hormone levels. Wait at least 30–60 minutes before drinking coffee, and separate calcium or iron supplements from levothyroxine by at least 4 hours because they can reduce absorption. We can help you optimize your thyroid medication timing and identify potential interactions with other supplements or medications you're taking.
