What is the Best Time of Day to Take Pepcid?
Medically reviewed by Andre Stone | MD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on August 25th, 2026.
When using over-the-counter Pepcid to prevent heartburn, follow the package directions and take it before food or drinks that usually trigger symptoms. Pepcid can also be taken to relieve heartburn that has already started. For prevention, take over-the-counter Pepcid as directed before the food or drink that usually triggers your heartburn—not necessarily your largest meal. If symptoms occur often or at night, ask a healthcare professional whether regular treatment and a particular dosing time are appropriate. Pepcid begins reducing stomach acid after it is taken, and its effects may last for several hours. Follow the package label or your prescriber’s instructions for timing and repeat doses. Take Pepcid only as directed on the package or by your prescriber. Some people use it only when needed, while prescribed daily regimens should be taken on the schedule their clinician recommends.
