What A1C Level Puts You in the Prediabetes Range?

Linda Girgis | MD

Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 20th, 2026.

An A1C level between 5.7% and 6.4% indicates prediabetes. This range means your average blood sugar has been elevated over the past 2-3 months, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Normal A1C levels are below 5.7%, while diabetes is diagnosed at 6.5% or higher. The American Diabetes Association uses these standardized ranges because A1C reflects your average blood glucose over approximately 90 days. About 88 million American adults have prediabetes, though many don't know it. Early detection through A1C testing allows for lifestyle interventions that can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes development.
