Does Medicare Advantage Cover Telehealth?
Yes. Medicare Advantage plans cover at least the telehealth Original Medicare covers, and some plans add more. Medicare's expanded telehealth rules run through December 31, 2027.
What Original Medicare covers by telehealth
Through December 31, 2027, Medicare covers telehealth from anywhere in the U.S., including your home. Visits are usually by video. In some cases, a phone call (audio only) counts too. Covered services include mental health care, depression screenings and cognitive assessments.
Rule | Status |
|---|---|
Visits from home | Through 2027 |
Phone-only visits | Through 2027 |
Mental health | Permanent |
The wider rules end after 2027 unless Congress extends them. From January 1, 2028, most telehealth other than mental health care would again need you to be at a medical facility in a rural area. Our guide to what telehealth services Medicare covers has the full list.
What plans may add
A plan may offer more telehealth than Original Medicare, such as more services you can get from home. Which extras you get varies by plan.
Plan rules still apply, and benefits can change from year to year. Your Annual Notice of Change (the letter your plan sends each fall listing next year's changes) shows what changes for 2027. Our guide to what's changing in Medicare Advantage for 2027 covers the rest.
What you pay
In Original Medicare, most telehealth costs the same as an in-person visit. You pay the Part B deductible first, then 20% of the Medicare-approved amount.
A Medicare Advantage plan sets its own copays or coinsurance for telehealth. Every plan also has a yearly limit on what you pay for covered services.
How to check your plan
Open your plan's Evidence of Coverage (the document that lists what it covers and what you pay):
Search it for "telehealth" or "virtual visits."
Note the copay for each kind of visit.
Check whether you must use a provider in the plan's network.
If something isn't clear, call the member services number on your plan card. Doctronic isn't a licensed insurance agent or broker and doesn't recommend plans. For free help comparing plans, use Medicare.gov, call 1-800-MEDICARE or contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).
