Does Long-Term Antidepressant Use Cause Brain Damage?

Current research shows no evidence that long-term antidepressant use causes brain damage. Some studies suggest antidepressants may influence brain structure, function, and adaptability, but it is not clear whether these changes are neuroprotective or reverse changes associated with depression. Available studies have not established that long-term antidepressant use causes structural brain damage, although the evidence has important limitations. Some research suggests SSRIs may promote neuroplasticity and help restore normal brain function in areas affected by depression. Discontinuation symptoms can occur, especially when an antidepressant is stopped suddenly. They do not by themselves indicate brain damage, but they can sometimes be severe or last longer than expected, so patients should discuss gradual dose reduction with their prescriber. For some people with recurrent depression, continued antidepressant treatment can reduce the risk of relapse, but the benefits and risks should be reviewed regularly with a clinician.
