Why Do I Feel Nauseous When I''m Hungry?
Medically reviewed by Linda Girgis | MD, Girgis Family Medicine on August 22nd, 2026.
Nausea when hungry occurs because your stomach produces excess acid and contracts when empty. When you haven't eaten for several hours, gastric acid continues to be secreted but has no food to break down, leading to irritation of the stomach lining. Additionally, your blood sugar levels drop after 3-4 hours without food, triggering hormonal responses that can cause nausea. The vagus nerve, which controls digestion, can become overstimulated during prolonged fasting periods. Eating small, frequent meals every 3-4 hours helps maintain stable blood sugar and prevents excessive stomach acid buildup.
