When Should You Take Lactulose?
Medically reviewed by Faith Coleman, University of New Mexico School of Medicine on August 22nd, 2026.
Lactulose is a synthetic sugar used as a laxative to treat constipation and to lower ammonia levels in people with liver disease. Take lactulose as prescribed by your doctor, typically 1-3 times daily for chronic constipation or hepatic encephalopathy. For constipation, the usual adult dose ranges from 15-30 mL daily, while hepatic encephalopathy may require 30-45 mL every 8 hours initially. Take it with water or fruit juice to improve taste, as lactulose has a very sweet flavor that some find unpalatable. The medication works by drawing water into the intestines and typically produces bowel movements within 24-48 hours. Consistency of use matters more than specific timing - taking it at the same times each day helps maintain regular bowel function and prevents breakthrough symptoms.
