Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. The FDA classifies pseudoephedrine as Category C, meaning animal studies have shown potential risks but human studies are limited. Research suggests possible links to birth defects, particularly abdominal wall defects, when taken during early pregnancy. Some studies indicate a small increased risk of gastroschisis in babies exposed to pseudoephedrine during the first trimester. If you're pregnant and need decongestant relief, saline nasal sprays, humidifiers, or pregnancy-safe alternatives like certain antihistamines may be better options.
