Yes, nitrofurantoin can cause yeast infections as a side effect. Like other antibiotics, nitrofurantoin disrupts the natural balance of bacteria in your body, including beneficial bacteria that normally prevent yeast overgrowth. Studies show that antibiotic-associated yeast infections occur in approximately 10-25% of women taking antibiotics. The medication kills both harmful and helpful bacteria, allowing Candida yeast to multiply unchecked in areas like the vagina or mouth. Yeast infections typically develop during treatment or within a few days after completing the antibiotic course.
