Only persistent infections with high-risk HPV types, particularly HPV 16 and 18 which cause about 70% of cervical cancers, can potentially develop into cancer over many years. The progression from HPV infection to cervical cancer typically takes 10-20 years and occurs in less than 1% of women with HPV. Regular Pap screenings can detect precancerous changes early, allowing for treatment before cancer develops. Most of the 80 million Americans with HPV will never develop cancer.
